[module 4] spring_city
Huddersfield (England), Dundee and Glasgow (Scotland), Amsterdam (the Netherlands), Tokyo (Japan)
April 2005 - July 2005

Rather than being based on the combination of sound effects and music typical of standard computer games, the audio in spring_alpha is being built as a real-time generated audio environment composed form on real-world recordings. The sound will contribute to the narrative effect of the gameplay, similar to the use of audio in film pioneered by Walter Murch.

Mark Vernon, a Glasgow-based sound artist and member of the bands Hasselhound, and Vernon and Burns, is creating the audio environment. He has been gathering sound recordings from locations around Dundee and Glasgow. These will form a library of samples from which a custom-made audio engine will generate the sound environment.

A pre-composed walkthrough of spring_city was created by Mark as a kind of psychogeographic tour of the game's urban environment.
